Hi all
I am very worried right now, about my son. Joe is 25 and a very active young man. He loves anything outdoors and is very fit. He rockclimbs, cycles, mountain biking, swimming, works out etc. Over the last 12 months he has had to have physio on his fingers and shoulders but several months inbetween. He started having twinges in his back a couple of days ago and now he is in agony. He has an appointment with GP tonight. Joe thinks it is sciatica but I am terrified that he might have what we have. The thought of either of my children getting this awful disease tears me apart. I can cope with it for myself and I ask God to double my pain rather than they get it. I know some of you do have children with it and I am sure you feel the same way. Of course it may not be RA and just a pulled muscle or something but I can't help but think it could be. I am crying now, just typing it. My eldest son Ben gets pain in his hip and I have often wondered about him getting it but he is ok right now. I think I am getting paranoid about this evil illness not for me but for other people. I want to ask any of you on the forum who are of one religious persuasion or another to pray that they will be spared the horrendous symptoms of RA. I am sorry if this is a bit heavy but I am so scared at the moment.

Hi Sheila
I fully understand your fears, I think we all dread the thought that we might pass this horrible disease on to our children. After my daughter gave birth 3 years ago her hands went all stiff and I was terrified it was the beginning of RA. However she is fine now.
I will certainly pray for a good outcome for your son.
Best Wishes
Sue

Hi Sheila,
I can understand your fear too! If ever my daughter complains of pain in here joints I worry that she might have RA, and like you I would take double the pain rather than she gets it! I already suspect she has hypermobility like me but have never mentioned this to her. Hopefully Joe will come back from seeing the GP with a simple diagnosis like a pulled muscle or something.

Hi Sheila, I'm afraid I can't imagine what you're going through not being a parent myself. I'm not religious but I'm sending lots of positive vibes your way for a bit of something and nothing for Joe. Take care Sara x

Doreen, Julie and Sara
Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers. Joe came back from docs with strong pain killers for 3 days. He said that he will go back if still bad after he stops taking the painkillers. I have told him to ask for a blood test although I am frightened of him having one in case it comes back positive. Yes, I know that's silly because if he was he needs to get treatment as early as possible but you know what I mean. He has been to a great sports injury physio in the past and he said he will go and see her because he trusts her judgement. Will let you know how he goes on. Thanks again.

Hi Sheila
I will certainly pray for your family. I know the worry from first hand experience, as my 22 year old was finally diagnosed with RA earlier this year ... but is very successfully on MTX - and still managed to get a 1st class honours degree. I worry about my 18 year old son, who is very active but so far he is fine. I know my other daughter who is 24 also worries about whether she might get it.
I always pray for them all that they will have a fulfilling life whatever they decided to do. I know for me, life hasn't turned out as I expected, but I've met lots of lovely people I never would have.. and definitely have a pretty good life... even with the ups and downs. But with all my friends here, I get encouraged so much in the down times. I also encourage my daughter in her down times too... but God has been good to her and she's off to King's College, London to do a masters in 2 weeks time!
love Anne xx

So very sad to hear this Sheila. I think it is something we all dread. My grandson is hypermobile and I often worry about his future in terms of RA. We are praying for Joe and the family. Love Jeanxxx

Thanks Anne
I thought about you and your daughter when I posted this. I know we would all rather have anything than our children suffer. Your daughter is an inspiration. She has done amazingly well and she will continue to do so with her obvious determination. Thank you so much for your kind thoughts and prayers. Hopefully Joe will be ok. GP has given him some strong painkillers to take for 3 days and then he will go back if no better.

Hi Jean
Thank you so much for your prayers and best wishes. As I have said to Anne, Joe has to go back in 3 days if no better. Hopefully it will be because he is so active and always climbing and doing what I call dangerous things, but that is his life and I would hate it to be taken away from him. I am a natural born worrier and usually my fears are unfounded so hopefully they will be in this case too.

hi Sheila,
just wanted to add my love and thoughts your way,

Hi Sheila, I have an active son like that, so I know where you are coming from, and I can well understand your fears - I think we all share them. My son plays a variety of instruments too, and began to experience pain with some stiffness a couple of years ago. I was terrified for him, and I think because of me having RA, it had crossed his mind too. I told him to go to the GP - he has the same one as me. Our GP sent him for blood tests - he said he knew I would be worrying, as well as my son, and thankfully these were OK. He had a muscle problem, and after a course of physio the problem was resolved.I was really thankful that we have a good GP who simply wanted to put both our minds at rest, and acted accordingly. Hope Joe is better soon, but if you have a decent GP, why not have a word with him/her? Take care, Kathleen x

Thanks for your kind thoughts Kathleen. He has been on the painkillers for 3 days and GP said he had to stop after that. He isn't any better so I am making him an appointment with an osteopath. He is going to go back to the GP as well so I am very much hoping that it is muscular and will go in time.

Hi Sheila
I forgot to add that my daughter also took up ballet at 20 yrs old!! As well as RA she has hypermobility problems all her life - but the ballet is helping amazingly and she just passed her first exam!! It seems to strengthen the muscles that hold the joints.. which used to keep getting dislocated - but no dislocations since ballet and MTX!!!

Thanks Lyn and Anne for your replies and kind thoughts. Anne - I can just imagine Joe's face if I suggest he has ballet lessons Joking aside, he is feeling a bit better now and he is going to see an osteopath on monday who will tell him if it is skeletal, muscular or whether or not he should go back to GP. Will let you all know. Thanks again for your concern Sheila x
